ROBBIE CAPITO: PROVING HIS PLACE AMONG THE BEST

Robbie Capito’s victory at the 2024 UK Open was a defining moment in his career. It marked his first Matchroom Major title and a breakthrough that showcased his ability to take down the sport’s biggest names. Now, as he prepares to defend his crown in 2025, the Hong Kong star is embracing the challenge with a mindset sharpened by experience.

“Honestly, it still feels overwhelming,” Capito admits. “I never expected to win it at that moment, especially given how tough the conditions were. Everyone knew it was one of the hardest setups we’ve played on. But that win was huge for me, and I’m still pushing to improve and lift more titles.”

His path to victory in 2024 was one of resilience and determination. Capito took down elite names like World Champion Fedor Gorst and the recently crowned European Open champion Joshua Filler, cementing his place among the sport’s elite. “That day was one of the best of my life,” he recalls. “Beating two of the top guys on tour, Josh and Fedor, back-to-back—it was an incredible feeling.”

But the most emotional moment came after he sank the final nine ball against Mieszko Fortuński. Capito’s reaction was raw, reflecting years of dedication and sacrifice. “When I made that last shot and sat down, I buried my face in my hands. In that moment, all the memories came flooding back—my dad, the people who believed in me, and those who are no longer here but were with me in spirit. That win was for them.”

Heading into the 2025 UK Open as the defending champion, Capito is focused but unfazed by the challenge. “Winning back-to-back would mean everything, but I’m not putting pressure on myself. I just take it match by match, staying as calm as possible. At this level, anything can happen—there are incredible players from all over the world. Nothing is guaranteed, but I’ll be ready to fight.”

Rather than feeling the weight of expectation, Capito is excited about the opportunity. “It’s a new year, and I’m eager to see what it brings. If I keep a strong mindset, keep learning, and stay focused, there’s nothing to lose. That’s the mentality I’m bringing into this event.”

One of his key areas of focus has been refining his shot selection. “I’m still young, and there’s so much I don’t know compared to more experienced players. That’s what I’m working on—making better decisions, staying consistent, and strengthening my mental game.”

Beyond the UK Open, Robbie Capito made a statement in his Premier League Pool debut, surging through the elite 16-player field to reach the semi-finals—a remarkable feat in his first appearance. But while defending his title in Telford remains a top priority, another major ambition is earning his place on Team Asia at the Reyes Cup, a spot he narrowly missed last year.

“I was disappointed not to make it, even as a major champion, but I understand the selection process. At the end of the day, I didn’t have enough ranking points. That’s on me. This year, I’m working harder to make sure I qualify.”

But the ultimate dream? “The World Championship. That’s the one. It’s been in my mind for a long time, and I know I’m not the only one chasing it. But that’s the goal.”

As he prepares to defend his UK Open title, Capito has a clear message for his competition. “I might be young, but I’m a beast when I’m at my best. I’m coming in strong, and I’ll be a tough opponent for anyone.”

With his relentless drive and fearless attitude, Robbie Capito is ready for whatever the rest of 2025 throws his way. And if his breakthrough year was anything to go by, this is just the beginning.
