David Alcaide: Defending the European Crown

David Alcaide, the reigning European Open champion, is poised to defend his title this week as he returns to Fulda, Germany for the 2024 European Open Championship. With an already impressive career and a triumphant victory in 2023, Alcaide’s preparation and mindset reflect his dedication to both his title defence and the sport itself.

Reflecting on his victory at last year’s European Open, Alcaide recalled the rollercoaster of emotions and the pivotal moments that defined his win. “It was an amazing feeling. I played well at the start of the year. I was unable to get the good result I wanted, losing a few matches in the later stages of big tournaments where I was unable to find the lucky run I needed. Finally, by the European Open both my break work and safety game had improved. The best it had been in the year, even in the final match where we reached hill-hill.”

In the final against Anton Raga, Alcaide knew he had to maintain focus and confidence, especially after witnessing Raga’s impressive victory over Joshua Filler. The match saw the two finalists go rack for rack until reaching the hill in rack 26.

“By hill-hill we both committed to a battle of safety shots, but when Raga responded with a good long shot on the 3-ball, that’s when I felt the pressure. Seeing the position of the balls across the table, I assumed he would clear up and win. But when he missed the 6-7 carom shot in the final rack, I seized that needed luck to claim my first Matchroom Major title.”

Winning last year marked a milestone in Alcaide’s career, becoming the oldest player to win a Matchroom Major solidified his place in the sport he loves. “My confidence soared after that win, and I felt my performance improved even further. From my victory in Fulda, I qualified for the Mosconi Cup alongside my friend Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, where we won our second Cup together without losing a single point.”

“Many people assume that once you reach your 40s or 50s, your chances of winning diminish compared to younger, more powerful players. But last year, I proved otherwise. My success was a result of relentless hard work, not age.”

Reflecting on his recent performances, Alcaide acknowledged the challenges he faced. “The start of the year was difficult for me. I learned of my mother’s passing on the final day of the UK Open Championship, which affected my focus and performance at the World Pool Championship. It’s been hard not being able to give my best on the table lately, but I understand that’s part of life’s journey.”

Despite the ups and downs, Alcaide remains committed to refining his game, learning from each match and adapting to new equipment. “At the start of the year, I switched my cue, which I believe has enhanced my performance. However, it took time to adjust, and the first six months were dedicated to perfecting my shots. Now, I feel more solid in my game.”

As ‘El Matador’ prepares for the 2024 European Open, he has adopted a balanced approach to training and personal life. After taking a much-needed break with his daughter to recharge, he has recently resumed intense preparation for the upcoming tournaments on the World Nineball Tour. “My main focus in training the past few months is my mental strength. I’m preparing not just to defend my European Open title but to also claim more Matchroom Major titles like the US Open later this month.”

Alcaide also spoke about his close friend Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, whose form has fluctuated recently this year. “Francisco is ready to bounce back. He has been working so hard alongside me to win another title and is waiting for his moment again. We have worked together for so many years now that we’re practically one team. When he wins, I’m happy for him, and when I win, he’s happy for me.”

Looking forward, Alcaide remains ambitious about his hopes upcoming invitational events on the tour. However he emphasises the importance of staying present and enjoying each game. “Of course, I would love to play in both the Mosconi Cup and Reyes Cup, but the mistake many make is focusing on getting their spots in those events instead of enjoying the event they’re playing in. When I concentrate fully on each match, the opportunities come naturally. It’s about giving my best one game at a time.”

As Alcaide prepares to defend his title and pursue new victories, his journey embodies the resilience and passion of an elite cueist. Regardless of his age, Alcaide has proven that with a balanced approach to training and mental fortitude, he is well-positioned to continue being a leading figure in the world of pool.
